Garages

Did you know that the complete absence of insulation in the garage is a significant cause of comfort & energy problems in other parts of the house?

Yup, it’s true. The garage is an easy part of the house to overlook insulation-wise but is a great place to make energy-saving improvements since it's not part of the overall living space.

Most garage ceilings or garage attics like this one are entirely uninsulated.

For homeowners that want to use their garage as a workspace, installing blown-in cellulose into the garage’s exterior wall cavities makes a huge thermal and acoustic difference.

For homeowners that want to use their garage as a workspace, installing blown-in cellulose into the garage’s exterior wall cavities makes a huge thermal and acoustic difference.

Because the garage is not part of your living space, builders often neglect to properly insulate some or sometimes all parts of the garage. Unfortunately, this often leads to discomfort and huge energy losses occurring in other parts of your house. Ecolofty can help you upgrade your garage insulation and eliminate cold floors in rooms above the garage, improving your home's overall level of comfort and efficiency. BCHydro is offering some great rebates to offset the costs of this too (go to our rebates & savings page and reference the “other insulation” category on chart or give us a call and we’ll help you out!).

Garage insulation upgrades

  • Insulating the garage ceiling: It's essential to insulate the garage ceiling if there is living space above the garage. Without insulation in the floor, the rooms above the garage will be uncomfortably cold in winter and hot in summer, and will waste energy all year round.

  • Insulating garage walls: When the garage is attached to the house, the wall that separates the garage from the living space should be air-sealed, insulated, and finished with fire-rated drywall. Our energy technicians can check the finished wall for insulation, and recommend solutions if no insulation is detected. We offer blown-in cellulose wall insulation options that are minimally invasive and won't require your drywall (or other) to be taken down. For homeowners that use or want to use their garage as a workshop or creative space, installing wall insulation throughout the space will create a much more comfortable work environment.

  • Installing a new garage door: The “door” door that separates your garage from your living space should be an insulated door with full weatherstripping – just like an exterior door. Building codes also call for this door to be fire-rated. If your door doesn't meet these requirements, talk to Ecolofty about having a new garage door installed. Additionally, many exterior garage doors now come with insulated options that can be installed for further improvements.
