Did you know that an incredible 90% of homes in North America today are under-insulated?
Yes, it’s true. And considering a properly insulated attic will do the most of any other insulation upgrade to help a home retain as much heat (in the winter), and as much cool (in the summer), as possible, attics really should be the first place homeowners consider when looking to upgrade the insulation in their home.
It’s not unusual to for us to hear homeowners say that they have never looked in their attic or that it has been years since they did. We get it, attics generally are not that inviting.
Attics are very revealing. Having a certified Ecolofty installer look at your attic is a quick, easy way to check for any potential problems, whether these be the overall state of your attic’s current insulation, any signs of pest or rodent infestation, any ventilation issues (is there adequate venting for air circulation?), the overall bed and/or bathroom fan performance, any leaking skylights, any air or water leakage, and/or any structural or long-term wearing issues with your roof. An attic inspection by one of Ecolofty’s professionals, in other words, will provide you with much valuable information on more than just your insulation.

Current BC Building code calls for R40 insulation in attics but BC Hydro is recommending (and offering great rebates to encourage) homeowners install R50. Ecolofty’s policy is to ensure that every homeowner’s attic we serve has at least R50 if not higher. Not only does R50+ guarantee the maximum possible thermal value, it also helps to create an incredibly acoustically quiet and high-performing house. Plus, upgrading your attic insulation will not only improve your home's comfort and energy efficiency, it will also save you considerable money. An attic insulation upgrade alone can cut your heating & cooling costs by as much as 40%. It will also restore comfort to rooms that get too hot or too cold at different times of the year. Unlike most renovation upgrades insulating your attic is an “only-one-time-is-necessary” type of upgrade that won't wear out or require further maintenance.
At Ecolofty, we understand how to remedy insulation shortfalls in your attic. Here's how:
We’ll thoroughly inspect your attic to identify problem areas or potential problems.
We’ll discover and uncover any holes, gaps and other penetrations on the attic floor and ensure these are properly sealed and draft proof. Pipe and electrical penetrations, can lights, chimney chases, top plates, drop down stairs and other gaps and cracks in the attic floor allow for heat from your home to leak into your attic. Since attics are ventilated, this air is lost to the outside. Conversely, heat from super-hot attics in the summer can migrate into the home, increasing the cooling load in living spaces. Unsealed attic floors leads to rooms and homes that are uncomfortable and difficult to heat in winter and cool in the summer. A well air-sealed attic floor yields some of the highest paybacks in terms of time and money spent and is an essential first step before the installation of insulation.
We’ll ensure your attic is well ventilated to avoid damage from moisture, mildew or odours, these leading to mould, mildew and rot. Soffit and roof vents are critical components of a roof system and when insulating, precautions need to be taken to preserve the flow of air from the soffit, above the insulation, to the roof vents. Ecolofty’s certified estimators/installers will inform you about your existing ventilation situation and what they can do to either preserve it or improve it.
We’ll install an abundance of our premium blown-in cellulose insulation up to the correct level your home requires, ensuring you have a dramatically more comfortable, energy-efficient home.
